Ganavarta (the voice of the people) came into being way back in the later half of the tormented decade of forties when the entire country was throbbing in the whirlwind of national freedom struggle. Some of the young revolutionaries who dared the atrocious British Imperialism and were detained in prisons of the country got released by 1945. These selfless youngmen initiated the publication of a progressive Bengali journal in the name of Ganavarta. To name a few were Dr. Arabinda Poddar, Peyarichand Bachhawat, Kalyan Chowdhury, Anil Chowdhury and later joined by the renowned political personalities like Nani Bhattacharya, Makhan Paul and journalists namely Kumud Dasgupta, Mozammel Haque et al. The untiring efforts and indomitable enthusiasm of these young revolutionaries committed to the cause of non conformist Marxism could set in motion the well ordained journey of one of the oldest socio-political weekly in the name of Ganavarta.

Tridib Choudhuri was detained by the British Colonialists even after the conclusion of the 2nd World war. Tridib Chaudhuri, the noted Marxist, the visionary joined the Editorial activities of the Ganavarta immediately after his release from the internment. This no doubt, added to the splendour of the journal. Dr. Nihar Ranjan Roy, the eminent historian of the then Bengal, Dr. Meghnad Saha, the world famous scientist and many other such eminent personalities contributed to the regular publication of the Ganavarta.

The old available records reveal that Nani Bhattacharya was the first officially declared Editor of the Ganavarta. He was succeded by Dr. Buddhadeva Bhattacharyya, Sukhamoy Chakraborty, Avinash Dasgupta and Debabrata Bandyopadhyay. At present, Manoj Bhattacharya is the Editor of this age old journal.

Since its inception the Ganavarta advanced the cause of the toiling millions both on the national and international planes. The journal continued to devote itself in identifying the social and economic evils as dumped on the peoples of the world by the moribund and decadent capitalism and imperialism. It continued the tirade against the ugly designs of crises ridden international capitalism to accentuate the objective of establishing the Toilers’ Democracy.

The hitherto proclaimed editorial policy of the Ganavarta has been critical of both the erstwhile Soviet Block and the PRC block. This has particularly been critical of the revisionist international outlook of the 3rd International since the early thirties of the 20th Century.

The Ganavarta has always been keen in promoting the scientific development of the human society being conscious of environment & ecology which are exposed to imminent peril following the unbriddled exploitation of aggressive finance capital.
